D'origine guadeloupéenne, il est né à Madagascar. Il a débuté le théâtre en suivant les cours de Sarah Sanders en 1988, qui l’a dirigé dansMam’zelle Julie de Strindberg. Il alterne les activités d’acteur, metteur en scène et réalisateur. Il fonde la compagnie «L’Autre Souffle » en 1997, à travers laquelle il produit, coproduit, ou met en scène quelques pièces de théâtre comme Liens de sang ou Martin Luther King Jr - La force d'Aimer. Jean-Michel a mené à bien des études de chirurgie dentaire. Il a pratiqué cet art à Paris et en Guyane française avant de fermer son cabinet de Cayenne en 1983 et de repartir pour vivre sa passion : être comédien !
